8/6/2023 0 Comments Darkwood beach antigua![]() These are the official taxi's with the people in the red shirts and the correct license plates. You can't bargain with them because they just move on to the next person. Try to say its the wrong price and they say no, the internet price list is wrong, and this is what it costs. The fare to get to Darkwood beach is $40 for 3 or less people and $10 a person for anything above. The taxi dispatchers, the taxi drivers at the port, and the taxi drivers out at the beaches coming back. Just wanted to report back that no one respects this price list. If there still is a concern, take the rates with one, to also produce. You have, as posted, the Official Tariff from The Antigua & Barbuda Tourist Board. For a half-day tour, you shouldn't be paying more US$ 120 (for the taxi with as many as 4 passengers). Although drivers are required to show a rate card (fares are officially fixed), make sure you agree on a fare before entering the taxi. Most taxi-drivers are reasonably good guides as well and, considering the size of the island, can take you to most highlights in a half-day tour. Prices are reasonable and taxis are the best way to go to any of the fabulous beaches in Antigua. In the Heritage Quay Terminal, you will find a Taxi Dispatch Kiosk with official taxi rates. Heritage Quay is the controlled area after the ship/port security gates. Normally there are the official taxies and then a bunch of other people in the same area who are off on their own. Our taxi driver was waiting for us at 2pm as arranged but I noticed that they are very flexible as one of our group asked if they could stay another hour which the driver agreed to.How do I tell the difference between the official taxies and then unauthorized cabs in the same area? Is there an actual taxi stand and a line of taxis or just a big free for all? I have seen both depending on where we go. The beach never got crowded and it was a really lovely relaxing time. There is free WiFi available on the beach and it was very fast. I am not a strong swimmer so like to stay in my depth but there were 2 quite steep drops so beware of this and also the waves can be quite rough and I got swamped by one which terrified me and I made a hasty retreat back to the safety of my sunbed. Now the sea here is lovely and looks very inviting but be warned it gave me a very frightening experience. We paid $20 for 2 sun beds and an umbrella - the umbrella was the wooden type so could not be adjusted any way but I managed to stay in the shade by moving the sunbed around it! We had a few very sharp showers but it did not spoil the day and we just went into the beach bar and had coffee for $3 each. This is a beautiful place with soft sand, a beach bar and toilets (which were just about ok). It was about 20 minutes drive through lovely countryside and then we were dropped off right at the entrance to the beach. We all then agreed a time of 2pm for our ride back to the ship. The fare was $8 pp one way so in total for the 2 of us it was $32 for the round trip. Straight off the ship there are loads of people offering trips and taxi services and we soon sorted out a taxi you then wait a few minutes until there are enough numbers - about 20 I think - to fill the taxi. We arrived in Antigua by cruise ship (Azura) and though we have been here many times before we had never done a beach so decided to go to Darkwood Beach.
