To do so, reboot the virtual machine and select the 2nd option from the GRUB window: You can’t do anything from the above screen but it was possible to reinstall the network manager from recovery mode. The first time it happened I just reinstalled the image but after the second time I thought it would be smarter to see if there was a quicker way to fix the problem. The main clue pointing the problem is the reoccurring error Failed to start network manager: The screen would freeze on this image below and start flashing between showing the text and a black screen. It seems to have worked but it still cannot detect my keyboard on start-up, so I cant enter my username/password on startup without plugging in a wired one. To see what’s running on your system, use initctl list. Naturally, you’re going to need to use sudo to run initctl or be logged in as root. This allows you to work with Upstart’s init daemon. If I restarted the virtual machine it then failed to boot. For applications managed with Upstart, you’ll first want to look at the initctl command. Select VPN Connections > Add a VPN connection. If you’re on wireless, it will be a WiFi icon. If you’re on a wired connection, the icon will be square like mine. From the Desktop, click the Network Manager icon at the top right of the screen. I’ve been working with a virtual image of Kali recently using VMWare workstation and had a problem where the machine would work fine for a few hours and then the applications would freeze and would not allow you to open new windows or tabs(you could close existing apps) Configuring an OpenVPN connection automatically.
